- 1What Is This Prehistoric Parasite?
Answered by u/im_confused011235813:It’s a fungus Ophiocordyceps, probably an earlier ancestor…Answered by u/smash_buckler:Escape is probably the wrong term. I’m fairly certain this is just the natural process of the fungus. The protrusion releases spores. I would guess the insect had climbed to a high place to increase the range. That’s what I remember from the documentary I saw several years ago.1,459 votesWhat do you think?Strange find?
- 2‘My Dad Found This While Planting Some Trees In Eastern Poland’
Answered by u/discardedlife1845:It’s a very corroded PIAT anti-tank spigot mortar.Answered by u/firefighter_raven:Interesting history. The USSR was only supplied with 1,000 of them. But the Polish resistance used them in the Warsaw uprising as well. So the chances it saw combat are very high, and this is an amazing find.1,476 votesStrange find?
- 3‘Found While Hiking’
Answered by u/Competitive_Lunch_16:Oh my god! That is definitely some sort of “Doa” or “Telesm,” a spell. I am almost sure it is not something a Muslim would use in its routine prayers or worships. As someone else mentioned, all the text [is] in Arabic; I see no readable Farsi in that. I can see some verses from Qoran also. And the mere existence of Ali’s sword (Zolfaghar) shows that it comes from some Shiaa Muslim source. But based on my general experience, it is a Telesm. Think about it as some sort of spell, Voodoo, or black magic. People buy it from witches (yes, there are people who still believe in this!) for specific purposes (gaining wealth, gain attention and love from someone, or bring bad luck to someone). They usually require following very ridiculous and specific procedure to get “activated.” For example, some should be rinsed with kids’ urine or should be [spat] on or buried in specific places. Probably this one needed to be thrown in running water. This is absolutely stupid, but there are people who believe in it and pay [a lot] of money to obtain and cast them!Edit: Looking closer, I noticed engravings of humans on one side of this object. It is very rare to see depiction of human on any Islam-related worship equipment. But that is something common in love “Telesm” or casts. Also, are those white pieces rice?Additional information from OP u/DenialGene:Wow, okay! Very interesting!I think there are a few grains of rice; they do seem kind of large for rice grains, though. One of the white items seems to be a tooth from a predator, maybe a cat but maybe something smaller!Answered by u/SweetBloodLVT:The tooth is an incisor. Could be from a cat or juvenile small dog.Answered by u/walee1:As someone from Pakistan, I would second this. Would explain the numbers and where it was found. Because to get rid of such stuff people often recommend to throw it in flowing water or burn it with respect.1,720 votesStrange find?

- 6‘Is This A Tracker?’
Answered by u/TimTows:If you bought it at a buy here, pay here or other dealership through a subpar lender, it’s to track you for repossession. If you didn’t, it’s either a former fleet vehicle or traded in by someone with a stalker or […] an overprotective parent. If you did get it from a buy here, pay here or through a subpar lender, it is very likely that this is not the “real” one. They usually install one that can be easily found, as well as a secondary one in a more secretive location. I’ve heard of some companies hiding three where two are functional. Most of these are not constant tracking (a few are). They send a ping when you start the car and when you turn it off. Some can be live pinged as well by the repossession agent after he is sent the repossession order containing the log-in information for that particular account.Source: Spent some time doing repossessions.Answered by u/LurpyGeek:Unplug it, hook it to a battery pack and toss it on top of a passing railroad car to entertain the company doing the tracking.1,378 votesStrange find?

- 8What Is This Mysterious Sword That Was Found In A House?
Answered by u/SolKeeperr:WWII Japanese Gunto type 98…Answered by u/cradman305:It looks like the mekugi pin is missing or rotted out – that should allow you to slide the entire grip assembly off the blade. Keep all of the guard bits and pieces (tsuba, seppa) together in the same order for reassembly later.Any signature on the blade would be engraved on the tang (nakago) of the blade. There’s nothing about this piece that says repro/fake to me yet, but the nakago will hold the most info. The two words on the back of the pommel (kabuto-gane) are a family name (mon) – 大前 Ōmae. The overall condition and polish still look good, and if all the seppa/tsuba bits have matching and original stamps, you’re looking at a good chunk of cash right there.Do not touch the blade with bare hands, as the polish is still good enough to see a temper line (hamon). Good chance there’s a family blade or at least a traditionally made blade in there. Oil it lightly with any kind of light machine oil or gun oil.1,043 votesStrange find?
- 9What Is This Odd Contraption In This Outlet?
Answer: A very dangerous situation…Answered by u/Ember-Blackmoore:That’s a human off switch.Answered by u/thematt455:If your hands are sweaty, there’s a good chance your resistance is low enough to be killed by 120. More than 50% of electrical deaths are caused by 120vac.Answered by u/MiracleAilement:There seems to be a reasonable explanation here: diy.stackexchange.com.Answered by u/Anonymous_Toxicity:I doubt it’s live; it could be the plug-in end of something else. I’ve seen some houses with built-in vacuum systems that had plugs like this. Seen people do similar things with heat tape around plumbing. Two ways to know. Either plug it in or call an electrician. By electrician I mean an actual electrician, not your dad who says he’s got this.969 votesStrange find?

- 12What Are These Fish?
Answered by u/JescoYellow:Checkered Puffer?”Checkered Puffer flesh can be toxic, which may explain their apparent nonchalantness in a predator-prey world. The toxins are in the fish’s intestines, liver, skin, and reproductive organs, which normally are discarded when a fish is cleaned, but the poison is so potent that it can contaminate the flesh during the clearing process…Eating Checkered Puffers has killed people. The poisoning is known appropriately as ‘puffer poisoning’; sometimes Checkered Puffer flesh is used to kill unwanted dogs and cats.”Answered by u/JulieHoolieHoo:Deadly slippers.839 votesStrange find?

- 15‘Large Two-Chambered Concrete Object Found In The Rural Woods Of Iowa’
Possible answer by u/maple204:Looks like the footing for a privy/outhouse. I think the structure has been removed and the base remains. They would have two pits, and one side would get used at a time while the waste on the other side decomposed and is emptied via a door on the angled part.Answered by u/Shazbot_2017:Archaeologist here; that concrete is far too modern for historic preservation…Horrific answer by u/Yamaben:Outhouses are usually 6 feet deep because hookworms from poop can only travel about 4 feet…A study commissioned by John D. Rockefeller in 1908 found that many people were sickly and anemic because of parasites in the soil around where… well… “business was done.” The study learned that many parasites, such as hookworms, can only travel a distance of about 4 feet. The simple idea of making an outhouse pit 6 feet deep thus made a real difference in health, especially in the warm South.Updated from OP u/iowafarmboy2011:SOLVED! It’s a livestock waterer spring box (adding to this comment for convenience – I hate searching the comments up and down for the answer). After searching historicariels.com, I found the location was part of an old farm that was torn down in the 1960s. This area was a livestock pen, and as such, this was a waterer that got water from a spring or creek. It’s right next to the Des Moines River.736 votesStrange find?
