What was intended to mark the joyful beginning of a new chapter instead ended in a brutal and deeply unsettling tragedy. Raja Raghuvanshi, who had traveled to Shillong to celebrate his honeymoon, was found dead in a remote canyon, bringing a sudden and violent end to what should have been one of the happiest moments of his life.
Raja’s body was discovered in a secluded gorge, stripped of personal identification, his wedding ring, and any immediate signs of who he was or why he had been there. The circumstances surrounding the discovery immediately raised suspicions among investigators, pointing to the possibility of a planned and deliberate act rather than an accident.
In the early stages of the investigation, police focused their attention on Raj Kushwaha, treating him as a primary suspect. However, as the inquiry progressed, evidence began to reveal a far more complex and disturbing narrative. Authorities now allege that the crime was orchestrated by Raja’s wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, who they say acted as the central planner behind the killing.
According to investigators, Sonam allegedly manipulated Raj Kushwaha through false assurances of love and commitment, persuading him to assist in the plot. She is further accused of recruiting three additional men—Vishal Singh, Anand Kurmi, and Akash Rajput—by offering them financial incentives to carry out the attack.
Police state that Sonam actively tracked Raja’s movements during the trip, providing real-time information that enabled the group to locate him in the remote area. Investigators believe Raja was ambushed and subsequently pushed into the canyon sometime between May 23 and May 24, leaving him with no chance of escape.
Following the killing, Raj Kushwaha reportedly returned home under the belief that he would soon reunite with Sonam. Instead, he allegedly discovered that she had been secretly involved with another man and that her intentions extended beyond Raja’s murder. Authorities suggest she had planned to eliminate Raj as well, further deepening the scope of the alleged conspiracy.
As investigators pieced together the case, they uncovered multiple layers of deception, manipulation, and betrayal. What began as a straightforward homicide investigation evolved into a complex web of relationships and motives, raising troubling questions about trust, coercion, and premeditation.
